Packing your hospital bag can be a minefield. If you’re like me, you will have read several articles and have been given lists from friends with babies. And then you combine them and are left with one enormous list…. “Do hospitals have airline style luggage allowances?!” I wondered before I had my first child. In the end, I decided to limit myself to one bag for baby and one for me. And, guess what, I survived! There were of course items I didn’t touch (magazines) and some I wished I had packed (make up!!).
I’m going to share with you the list I used for my second child (a modified version of my previous list) and which covers all the essentials and then tells you about some of the “nice to haves” that you may wish to add to your baby hospital bag.
In this guide, I’m assuming that you have a normal delivery with an overnight stay in hospital but, if you are scheduled in for a caesarean section, then you will need to pack larger quantities of the items because you will have a longer stay in hospital.

The Essential Bag Company’s hospital bag range started its life as this list. Our hospital bags contain the essentials for mother and baby for the hospital stay. We include our Hospital Bag Checklist in the bag so you can add other items, for example, your hospital notes and your favourite snacks. The bag, a changing bag, is not only useful for the hospital stay but it is a must have accessory for after the baby arrives.
We appreciate how special the birth is and include only the finest quality items for mother and baby. For example, the Petit Bateau clothing is certified by the Oeko-Tex label to guarantee that there are no harmful substances in the fabric so your baby’s skin is protected. All items have been carefully selected to ensure they are the most suitable products and that no item in the hospital bag goes unused.
